Study on the Participation in Leisure Activities According to the Level of Independence in Activities of Daily Living among Inpatients with Stroke: Targeting Pre-elderly and Elderly Population
Lee Hye-Jin

Abstract
Objective : The present study investigated the level of participation in leisure activities according to the degree of independence in activities of daily living(ADL) among pre-elderly and elderly patients who were admitted for stroke. The study aimed to use the findings to examine leisure activities that could be sustained even in older age and to provide basic data for the elderly-friendly leisure industry.

Method : During the study period of July 1 to August 30, 2018, the present study analyzed 92 pre- elderly and elderly patients with stroke among those receiving inpatient care at rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions. The modified Barthel index (MBI) was used to classify the degree of independence in ADL of the participants, while a questionnaire survey was used to determine their level of participation in leisure activities. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SPSS 23.0

Result : Significant differences were found in ball games among dynamic activities; events/festivals, singing classes, photography, and exhibition among cultural/festival activities; visiting friends and family, religion, relationship with the opposite sex, fellowship gatherings, and participation in social group activities among social participation activities; shopping/going to the market among travel activities; mobile phone games among entertainment activities; and information search and arts and craft activities among static activities. However, there were no significant differences in time spent on leisure activities and barriers to leisure activities according to the degree of independence.

Conclusion : While development of leisure activities for the elderly and disabled is important, it is just as important to identify the barriers to leisure activities to establish an environment that promotes active leisure activities.
